Bureau of Indian Standards
With the passage of time certain structural constraints in the
legislative framework hindered the organization’s effectiveness. Of
prime importance was the menace of misuse of ISI’s Standard Mark. In
the mid 1980’s it was felt necessary to confer a statutory status to ISI’s
functioning which led to the enactment of the BIS Act, 1986. ISI was
now renamed as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), to promote
harmonious development of standardization, and quality certification
of goods, with a clearly defined management structure. The new
statutory status conferred on BIS provided the organization with the
legal basis to effectively and efficiently work towards the acceptance
and promotion of Indian Standards.
