It is a matter of proud privilege for me to have been
associated with BIS for more than four years and witness the
way this Organization has evolved in these rapidly changing
times.
"Standards are to the industry what culture is to the
society" - this quote by Shri C. Rajagopalachari, the
first Governor General of India after independence, set the
foundation for onset of standardization in the country.
Standardization is sine-qua-non for development of the
national economy all over the world. The goals of quality
are set by standardization.
|
Initially, as Indian Standards Institution (ISI) and later in its
present avatar, BIS has been at the forefront of the quality
movement in the country for decades. BIS, as the national
standards body, has been providing traceable and tangible
benefits to economy in a number of ways - providing safe,
reliable, quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers;
promotion of exports and import substitutes, control over
proliferation of varieties etc.
These are indeed exciting times for BIS, as in today's complex
world, standards have become powerful tools to drive positive
change by detailing specifications that facilitate
interoperability, create enabling business environments, spur
economic growth and help mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Conformity assessment and Hallmarking are the other two key
areas where BIS has been playing a stellar role to satisfy the
consumers' need for quality goods and services. Initiatives have
been undertaken to cover more goods under the ambit of these
schemes to ensure their compliance with the quality standards.
I thank our stakeholders for their active participation in our
endeavors and seek their support in future. The continued
experience of working with our stakeholders has significantly
advanced our thinking and helped us negotiate the challenges
better.
I invite your valuable inputs as to how best we
can leverage and enhance our capabilities to reach even greater
heights.
